South Africa 600 Club

The 600 Club is a list of birders who have seen 600 species or more, within the borders of South Africa, excluding Lesotho and Swaziland.

The 600 Club List | Guidelines | Jo'burg-Pretoria Listing Club

In the past few Southern African birders have kept a country list, and have rather paid attention to their Southern African List. The importance of the Southern African region, has been reinforced by the publication of Roberts VII, which focusses on the birds of Southern Africa south of the Kunene and Zambezi Rivers.

However, many birders from many parts of the world keep national lists, and South Africa has a respectable bird list. Since the vast bulk of Southern African birders live and reside in South Africa, why not keep a list for South Africa?

The focus on this list also means that many people who have not had the opportunity to travel extensively in the wider region, can focus on a realistic milestone, in terms of their birding. By so doing, they will also be contributing to the development of a better knowledge of the less explored birding regions in Limpopo Province and elsewhere, and enhancing our knowledge of the birds of the lesser known frontier areas, as well as the development of birding tourism there.

Since this is a national list, it should obviously exclude birds seen in other countries, such as Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia.

The list is maintained by Etienne Marais - to submit or update your total, please send an e-mail using the contact link at the bottom of this page.
