AIM OF THE CHALLENGE

The aim of the challenge is that we are able to update the knowledge of birds in our area, as well as that of our birding sites, and that we are able to make a significant scientific contribution to existing structures that utilize this info. Hopefully we will unearth great new birding spots and discover meaningful populations of bird species unrecorded in our area.

The Electronic Bird Monitor challenge for the Pretoria 100 km area runs anually from 1 Jan to 31 Dec. You can however join at any time.

How to take part in the challenge.

Sign up online. Then Download and install the customized listing program, which includes a list of all birds in the area, as well as a complete national list.

Use the listing program to complete all your birdlists. Select the name of the area you were birding at from the area selection box in the program or enter your own name for the area and include all the information that will allow us to determine where you where. If you have a 1:50 000 map of the area determine the grid reference of the area you were. When you are there note any other information on the site, and add these info to the area info page on the listing program. Send in your list by using the build in facility of the listing program or send it to pcc@birding.co.za.

The list of sites will give you and indication of which sites have not been monitored. There are a number of good resources which one can consult on birding spots, including the Pretoria Bird Club Web-site and Guy Gibbons birding spots at www.sabirding.co.za.

How to sign up?

Sign up using the online form, or call Pieter van Zyl on 082 655 4251. A list of all participants are available on this Web-site, and we encourage people to get in touch with each other, share information and go birding together!. An email forum exist for communication between the participants, and to keep all the observers informed about special outings and other info. You will be invited to join this forum once we receive your first lists.
