Birding Courses

Introduction

We offer regular courses for beginners, and also a variety of other birding courses. If you would like to start out birding, or give your birding a boost, attend one of our courses. Courses all have a fieldwork component and are limited in numbers. No courses are run with groups larger than 20, and our LBJ and Warbler courses are limited to 15 and 12 respectively.

The courses we offer include the following:

5-6 November 2011: Birds of Prey Identification Course

Raptors are probably the most exciting group of birds we encounter - but can often be very frustrating when it comes to identification! This intensive course covers both the theory and practice of Raptor Identification and includes interesting material on all Southern African birds of Prey, including the Owls. The course takes place over a full Saturday and a Sunday morning. Lectures cover the basic process of Raptor Identification and an extensive slide library is used to highlight the key things to look for in all the "raptor-choices" you are faced with. A number of interactive group and individual exercises will ensure that the weekend is a dynamic learning experience. It also includes a field outing. ..........More on the Raptor Course.

Venue: Optilog Centre, Centurion.

29 & 30 October(2011)Bird Identification for Beginners.

Bar-throated Apalis in PretoriaThis regular course is held in Centurion and Johannesburg and is limited to 20 participants at a time. The course is intended for those just starting out in birding and focuses on a practical "hands on" approach to bird identification. Our participative approach will ensure that by the end of the weekend you have gained a lot in confidence and know where to start when seeing an unfamiliar bird! The course includes a guided field outing, during which participants can practice in the field - as well as seeing lots of good birds. You will receive a printed "work-book" which provides an overview of all the bird groups in South Africa. Advice on binoculars, bird books and other equipment is also provided. .........more on the beginners course.

Venue: Optilog Centre, Centurion.

18-20 November The 12th LBJ Field Course

This course has been running since 2004 and is a weekend field course, which focuses on giving participants practical, "hands on" experience of the birds in the field. We look at habitat types in a lot of detail and the course covers such LBJWing-snapping Cisticola essentials as "giss", calls and characteristic behaviours which help pin down LBJ identity. being the key focus. We usually show groups more than 15 Larks, pipits and cisticola species in the field. .........more on the LBJ Field Course

Venue: Ezemvelo Nature Reserve.

2 - 4 March 2012 and 16 - 18 March Warbler Field Courses

These weekends are run as a course in the identification and location of warblers in South Africa, with an emphasis on the palearctic migrants which are present. It is a weekend long residential course and usually includes a lot of excellent birding with species such as Bronze-winged Courser, Great-Spotted Cuckoo and even Baillon's Crake also being on offer! ........more on the warbler field courses.

Venue: Wolfhuiskraal Farm, (80km N of Pretoria)
