The high summer in late December is the most exciting time to go birding in the Wider Gauteng region. There are plenty of specials on offer at this time of year. We retrace the route of the Raiders of the Lost Lark, who in 2005 became the first bird-race team to record more than 300 species in 24 hours. Areas we plan to visit, include Rust de Winter, Mkhombo Dam, Mdala Nature Reserve, Mabusa Nature Reserve, Verena Grasslands, the Vlaklaagte Grasslands, the Wilge River Valley, Luiperdskloof Game Lodge and other localities not covered in the "Chamberlain Guide to Birding Gauteng. The tour will be conducted in two 4x4 vehicles and the price includes three nights accomodation at local game lodges. Key target Species include African and Great Spotted Cuckoo, Garden Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Collared and Black-winged Pratincole, Western Redfooted Falcon, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Cuckoo Hawk, African Finfoot, Pallid and Montagu's Harrier, Olive-tree Warbler, Shelleys and Orange-river Francolin, Grey-hooded and Pygmy Kingfisher, Bushveld, Striped and Short-tailed Pipit, Freckled and Rufous-cheeked Nighjar, African Crake, Corncrake, Harlequin Quail, Allens' Gallinule, Common Swift, Western Honey-Buzzard, Monotonous Lark, Flappet Lark, African Grass-Owl, Red-chested Flufftail, Denham's Bustard, White-Bellied Korhaan, Dwarf Bittern, Tinkling Cisticola, Green-capped Eremomela, Cuckoo Finch, Buff-streaked Chat and many others.....
