Intermediate Birding Course

Introduction



You have got into birding and are able to identify some or many common species. Now you want to learn how to find, see and identify more difficult birds. The weekend focuses on some of the more tricky bird groups including Larks, Raptors and waders, this is tackled through lectures and also some field-work. You will learn key birding skills in the field and enjoy a weekend of good birding in the company of an expert guide. The course is held on a guest farm about 40 minutes north of Pretoria. The course consist of lectures, a course pack, worksheets and guided field outings, during which you will put some of what you have learned into practice! The Weekend programme is made up of four lecture components. The following topics will be covered:

Lecture 1: Difficult Birds 1: LBJ's Overview of the main groups of LBJ's and key things to look for and at when identifying LBJ's. Calls and songs of LBJ's.

Lecture 2: Difficult Birds 2: Raptors. Overview of the main groups of raptors and key things to look for and at when identifying raptors. Age and sex as a challenge in raptor identification. Identification of raptors in flight. Practical exercises and raptor ID quiz (slide show)

Lecture 3: Difficult Birds 3: Waders, Terns and others. Overview of methods for wader identification. Key waders which occur and the main features to look at. (Slide show).

Lecture 4: Enhancing your birding skills. This lecture looks at several key birding skills, which enhance the overall birding experience and place the birder in a better position to identify the birds you are looking at.
