Birding in and around Pretoria/Johannesburg

Pretoria and nearby Johannesburg are close to a diversity of bird habitats with about 440 species regularly occuring.

To the north and west of Pretoria, the Magaliesburg range - running east-west is natural boundary between the highveld to the south and the bushveld to the north. The bushveld varies from scrubby dry acacia (thornveld) to broadleaved woodlands, best represented at Borakolalo and in the Seringveld north-east of Pretoria. Within this region, about 60 species endemic or near endemic to Southern Africa can be seen. For the full list of endemics and their status click here.
